Buy this coverA First Day Cover, cancelled on the day of issue with the official Royal Mail special handstamp, is the standard way to mark a new stamp release. It records the issue date, the stamp design, and the postmark in a single collectible item — unaddressed and in mint condition.
The introduction of barcoded stamps in February 2022 was the most significant change to British stamp design in decades. Non-barcoded definitives were demonetised in January 2023, creating a clear historical boundary. Many collectors use this transition as a natural starting point for a modern GB collection.
"Many collectors aim for a complete, unbroken run from the start of the barcode era — every issue, in sequence, properly postmarked."
In February 2022, Royal Mail began replacing traditional stamps with barcoded versions — a fundamental change to British stamp design. Each barcode stamp carries a unique data matrix code, and non-barcoded stamps were withdrawn from postal use in January 2023.
For collectors, this transition created a clear collecting boundary. First Day Covers from the barcode era document the change in real time — the new designs, the new definitives, and the shift in how Royal Mail issues are produced and distributed.
Barcode-era collecting sits comfortably within the tradition of modern GB philately. The same principles apply: issue-date postmarks, unaddressed covers, correct special handstamps, and collector-grade condition. The subject matter has changed; the standards have not.

Illustrated: Definitive Tariff Issue — 26 March 2026
King Charles III barcoded definitives with the "Digital Philately — Scan · Decode · Collect" special handstamp, London N1. The data matrix barcode alongside each stamp is unique to that individual stamp — a fundamental change to British stamp design introduced in February 2022.
